The forestry worker protection screen by Pfanzelt Maschinenbau GmbH has been awarded the silver medal in forestry technology. When felling, and especially in areas with high deadwood rates, there is a risk to felling staff of being hit by falling branches and parts of the crown. The personal protection screen is attached

to a Moritz mini felling tractor and it is hydraulically extended once the unit has been positioned in front of the tree. The protection screen extends around the tree at a height of around 2 metres to particularly and reliably protect felling staff in the felling preparation phase. The felling tractor’s hydraulics can simultaneously be used during the actual felling process to once again open the screen on one side and support felling. In contrast to former designs as part of which a forwarder used a crane holding a roof to protect felling staff,

personnel must now no longer remain under a supported crane arm. An additional plus is that using mini felling tractors is

more cost-effective compared with forwarders. Although each case of moving into standing timber away from forestry tracks must be assessed individually, the system represents an efficient and comparably cost-effective option to boost occupational safety.
